Do not let risk of Chicago floods spoil your appetite

With a population of 2,693,976, Chicago is the most populous city in the United States' Midwestern region. Chicago is an iconic city famous for many things, including deep-dish pizza, jazz music, Al Capone, loyal sports fans, and a wide range of museums.

One of the things Chicago is most famous for is its rich culinary heritage, and any visitor to the city will be spoiled for choice when it comes to finding a place to eat.

Chicago has a delicious culinary history

The city's ethnic and working-class roots have given rise to a wealth of different cuisines, and you will find everything from fine street fare to world-class restaurants here. Three of the most famous Chicago meals are:

  • Deep dish pizza. Authentic Chicago deep-dish pizza has a deep base with lashings of cheese and a chunky tomato sauce on top of the cheese instead of underneath it. If deep dish is not your favorite pizza, you will be glad to learn that Chicago is also famous for crispy thin crust pizza cut into squares.
  • The Italian beef. This curiously named dish is a sandwich – but it is not like any sandwich you have tasted before! The Italian beef features thin-sliced beef simmered in gravy and served with Italian seasonings, on a roll soaked in the meat juices.
  • Chicago-style hot dogs. Chicago dogs have an all-beef sausage on a poppy seed bun. A real dog has mustard, onion, tomato, peppers, dill pickle, sweet pickle relish, and celery salt – but never ketchup.

Chicago's food does not stop with these three popular dishes, however. Some lesser-known but still delicious dishes to look for include:

  • The Big Baby cheeseburger, with cheese tucked between two hamburger patties.
  • Pork chop sandwiches with a tender bone-in chop served with mustard and onions.
  • Breaded steak sandwiches featuring breaded steak fried Milanese-style and served in a roll with marinara sauce.
  • A gym shoe (sometimes known as Jim Shoo) sub sandwich with corned beef, gyros, and roast beef.

If you have a sweet tooth, you will love Chicago Brick. This ice cream dessert looks like traditional Neapolitan ice cream, but instead of strawberry, vanilla, and chocolate flavors, it has orange sherbet, vanilla, and caramel.

Chicago also has a burgeoning farmer's market culture, and it is becoming more common for whole families to spend a morning shopping for local cuisine. There are currently more than 30 farmer's markets in Chicago, and many are run by the city.
