Preventing Water Damage from a Failing Dishwasher in Chicago

A dishwater with dishing in it open One way to prevent your dishwasher from failing is to not overload it.

Steps to keep your dishwasher working properly

One of the most common reasons for water damage in Chicago homes is dishwashers. There are several important steps you can take to help prevent your dishwasher from failing and causing havoc to your home.

If you have already had a water emergency from your dishwasher in your Chicago home, SERVPRO are the ones to reach out to. Our staff is specially trained and experienced to handle any water damage, and we move fast to get to your home, assess the harm, and come up with a plan to remove the water and dry your home out again.

You should also ensure your drain line is hooked up correctly to the sink. It needs to be tightly connected to the plumbing underneath your sink and not loose in any way. The natural pressure from the dishwasher wears at the connection between the two if it is loose at all, possibly dumping a full dishwasher’s worth of water into your kitchen. Only run your dishwasher while you are at home so you can shut it off if something happens.

Keep an eye out for buckling or warping on the area of the floor surrounding your dishwasher. It is a sure sign there is a leak, and you need to contact us at SERVPRO right away.

If you have a basement immediately below your kitchen, monitor the ceiling in that area for water stains or any other distress signs.

Lastly, make sure you are not overfilling your dishwasher, as it causes water during the cycle to move in ways it should not be moving, exacerbating small issues.

SERVPRO of West Loop / Bucktown / Greektown has the industrial equipment, such as truck mounted pumps, to remove any standing water in your home in West Loop, Chicago, or Bucktown after your dishwasher has failed. We also have large fans and dehumidifiers to dry it out completely again. Call us at (773) 434-9100 as soon as you recognize a problem, as more damage can occur if you leave the water for any length of time.
